Packaging design for Kumilio, a greek company that produces Kimi figs – a P.D.O. product – and fig bars.
The brief asked for an identity that would emphasize on the characteristics of the fig: soft skin, crunchy texture of the numerous seeds, significant energy value. The solution that qualified was to create mosaic-styled illustrations, as a metaphor for crunchiness, where the tesserae symbolize the figs as they are put together on drying racks before they are let sun dry. The naive outlines and calm color pallette give a carefree feeling that is contrasted by the strict typography that refers to early industrial signboards, helping create a strong and memorable image.
The mosaic suited perfectly with the fig bars as well, since – additionaly to the above – it resembles the fig bar itself, mottled by sesame seeds, dry nuts chunks and spices.

The small “matchbox” pack aims mostly at occasional consumers of Kimi figs, who use it as a a cooking ingredient or would offer it as a gift, whereas the large pack addresses to Kimi fig lovers. The fig bars intend to turn up as a natural alternative to energy bars, and are therefore available in a much wider range of P.O.S.
Kumilio as a brand name, is a pun made of the words “kimilio” (“heirloom” in greek) and Kumi – as the locals call their hometown, Kimi. The logo is attempting to give a simplified symbol for “heirloom”: an object of unclear use that usually derives its value from the intervention of the prior owner (probably a loved one), eg. inscription of their initials or full name.
A calligraphic approach was chosen in order to emphasize the uniqueness of such an item, as Kumilio considers the Kimi fig to be so.
